Online Harassment
Online harassment refers to harmful and disruptive behaviour that takes place in online environments, such as social media platforms or online games. Examples of online harassment include:
- Threatening comments or messages
- Targeted harassment – intentionally directing someone to be subjected to wider harassment, bullying, or hostility
- Sexual harassment in comments or messages
- Defamation or public shaming
- Repeated offensive or negative commenting, bullying
- Sharing someone’s personal images or information
- Creating fake profiles
Online harassment as such is not specifically listed in the Finnish Criminal Code, but various forms of online harassment can meet the criteria for a criminal offence. Depending on the method used, these may include defamation, dissemination of information infringing on privacy, sexual offences, unlawful threats, stalking, and identity theft.
Victims of Online Harassment
Online harassment can target individuals or groups. Targets may include public figures such as politicians or other societal influencers, athletes, artists, or social media content creators. Online harassment can also be a form of school bullying or other systematic harassment.
Anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background, can be subjected to online harassment, but belonging to a minority can increase the risk. Online harassment is also discussed as a form of gender-based violence, as it often targets women and aims to limit their freedom of expression and safety in digital environments.
Consequences of Online Harassment
Online harassment always has consequences for the victim. These may include fear, anxiety, low mood, loss of trust in others, and, for example, increased use of alcohol or other substances. Serious online harassment can also lead to financial losses, long-term reputational harm, and a narrowing of opportunities for expression and participation.
To prevent online harassment, it is essential to raise awareness of the phenomenon and its consequences. It is also important to establish clear rules and procedures in online environments to prevent harassment and address it effectively.
