Deepfakes

A deepfake is an AI-generated image or video, often looking genuine, in which another person’s face or voice has been combined with AI-generated or existing content. The term deepfake comes from the words deep learning and fake. A deepfake can show a person appearing to do something they never actually did.

A significant share of deepfake content made without consent is sexual in nature or violates a person’s sexual integrity. Deepfake technology is also used in other contexts, such as online scams that use the face and voice of public figures, as well as in bullying, and as a tool for online harassment and damaging someone’s reputation.

When someone spreads deepfake content online without the subject’s consent, this is a form of digital violence, which can have many consequences for the victim, such as:

  • shame and guilt
  • fear and a sense of insecurity
  • damage to reputation and relationships
  • anxiety, depression and isolation
  • trauma symptoms and suicidal thoughts

Spreading an offensive deepfake image or video of another person online without their consent can be a crime. Even though a deepfake is artificially generated, it can cause real damage to a person’s reputation. Material like this can also meet the legal definition of a crime.

What should I do if a deepfake has been made of me?

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to fully protect yourself against deepfakes. Pictures exist of every one of us that could be misused in many ways. However, you have the right to defend your privacy.
